Great Lavra - Mount Athos

The%20Great%20Lavra%20-%20Mount%20Athos The Great Lavra is first in the hierarchy of monasteries and dedicated to the Dormition of hosios Athanasios, the wise monk and friend of the emperor Nikephoros II Phokas, who in A.D. 963 founded the first lavra (small group of hermits with a common superior and a central house of prayer) on Mount Athos at a site probably previously occupied by the ancient township of Akrothooi.

The monastery, a model of the cenobitic life and an example for those that followed, received generous gifts from Nikephoros II Phokas, his successor Ioannis Tzimiskes, and Basil II the Bulgar Slayer, and experienced moments of glory and grandeur down to the end of the l4th century. It was rescued from decline - the result of destructions and raids by pirates (15th-16th centuries) - by the patriarch Dionysios III (A.D. 1655), who gave his entire fortune to it. It was later rescued both by the Russian tzars and by the princes of the Danubian principalities. The great Cretan painter Theophanes and Frangos Katelanos both worked in the Great Lavra - the former in A.D.1535 and the latter in A.D.1560.

The monastery of Vatopedi

The monastery was founded shortly after A.D. 972, possibly on the site of the ancient town of Dion, by Athanasios, Nikolaos and Antonios of Adrianoupolis. The monastery owes its name to the flora of the surrounding area which consists of dense groups of shrubs (vatos = shrub, pedion = plain, ground). It celebrates the feast of the Annunciation and is the second ranking monastery of the Athonite State. It was here, close by the monastery, in 1743, that the "Athonite School" was established, at which taught enlightened teachers of the Nation. The mosaic icons on the walls of the katholikon of the monastery (Annunciation - Saint Nikolaos) convey the spiritual and artistic regeneration of the Palaiologoi as formulated in Constantinople, while parts of the painted decoration of the exonarthex of the same church, untouched by later hands, reflect the form that regeneration took in Thessaloniki (Panselinos School).
Vatopedi

The monastery Iveron

Dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, this monastery, the third in the hierarchy, was found-ed by Ioannis Tornikios and the Iberians (Georgians) Georgios and Euthymios in the last quarter of the l0th century A.D. The Palaiologoi, the princes of Iberia and the Serb kral Stephen Dusan all endowed the monastery with new buildings. It was also given support by many of the patriarchs, mainly during the Ottoman occupation.
Iveron

Chelandari

The monastery Chelandari, dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, and fourth in the hierarchy, was founded, as a result of a chrysobull issued by Alexios III Komnenos (A.D. 1198), on the ruins of an earlier monastery of the same name which existed here already before A.D. 1015.

Its founder was saint Sabbas (secular name Rastko) with the support of his father the King of Serbia, Stefan Nemanja, the later monk Symeon. The monastery received fabulous wealth and gifts from the Serb rulers in the l4th century and from the Russian tzars and the voivods of the Danubian principalities under the Ottoman occupation. It made a great contribution to the spiritual awakening of the Serbian people. The high quality of the wall-paintings in the katholikon of the monastery links them with the artistic production of Thessaloniki during the first decades of the l4th century and particularly - according to one view - with the activity of the anonymous painter who worked on the church of Saint Nikolaos Orphanos in Thessaloniki.

Monastery of Koutloumousiou

Dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour, this monastery, the sixth in the hierarchy, was probably erected in the first half of the l2th century A.D., according to a document dating from A.D. 1169. Its founder was probably a monk from Africa (koutloumous the saint from Ethiopia). Decimated by the raids of the Catalans, it found a fervent supporter and generous patron in the person of Ioannis Vladislav, Prince of Hungro-Wallachia (second half of the l4th century). The monastery acquired prestige and power through its designation as a patriarchal establishment (A.D.1393), its annexation of the Monastery of Alypios (A.D.1428) and gifts from many emperors.

In A.D. 1497 it was destroyed by a great fire, and again in A.D. 1767 and A.D. 1870. It was supported in its times of trial by laymen and clerics from many parts of the Orthodox Christian world who made generous contributions.

Pantokrator monastery

The monastery of Pantokrator is seventh in rank, and dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour, the monastery was founded by the brothers Ioannis and Alexios Strategopoulous. The latter served as the "great camp-commander" of Michael VIII Palaiologos and helped to recapture Constantinople in A.D. 1261. Amongst those who made bequests and donations to the monastery are mentioned Ioannis V Palaiologos, Katherine II of Russia and the princes of the Danubian principalities. It suffered extensive damage from the fires of A.D. 1773 and 1948.

The monastery of Xeropotamou

The Xeropotamou monastery is dedicated to the memory of the Forty Martyrs and is eighth in the hierarchy. According to tradition it was founded by the empress Pulcheria (A.D. 450-457). It is more likely however that it was founded by hosios Pavlos Xeropotamenos, a rival of saint Athanasios, shortly after monks first came to the Great Lavra. Amongst the benefactors of the monastery were the Palaiologoi and the kings of Serbia and, during the Tourkokratia, sultan Selim I. The monastery suffered badly from raids and fires in the l6th and l7th centuries A.D., and modern times have not been particularly kind to it.

The monastery of Docheiariou

The monastery of Docheiariou originally dedicated to saint Nikolaos Myron, and later to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, which is tenth in the hierarchy, was founded, according to tradition, in the second half of the l0th century A.D. by saint Euthymios, fellow-monk and pupil of saint Athanasios. In times of hardship, it was supported by Ioannis V Palaiologos and the king of Serbia Stefan IV. Gifts were bestowed upon it in later periods by the princes of Moldavia and Wallachia. In 1821 the monastery was abandoned and lost almost all its property.

The monastery of Zographou

According to tradition the founders of this 406 monastery of Zographou, which is ninth in the hierarchy and is dedicated to saint Georgios were the brothers Ioannis, Moses and Aaron from Ochrid (in the time of Leon VI the Wise, A.D. 880-912). However, the text of the First Typikon makes it clear that the monastery already existed in the l0th century A.D. Concern for its well-being was shown by the Palaiologoi (Michael VIII, Andronikos II and Ioannis V) and by many of the rulers of Hungro-Wallachia.
