To know the Holga is to love her. Some may dismiss the Holga as, well, let’s say a rather “generously built” simple, little clicker. But in her case, bulky is beautiful. What she lacks in compactness, she more than makes up for in her gift for taking the most charming hazily vignetted pictures. So what if she’s simple? That’s what makes her the perfect contender for DIY modification. In admiration of her many talents Lomo prides itself on being the home of all things Holga. You name it we’ve got it, fixtures, fittings, tips and tricks, books, galleries and handy packages! Sheepish about your handiwork skills? We will show you in just a few simple steps, how you too can transform your Holga into your very own customized masterpiece. With our trusty Mod-Masters, Mandi and Daniel, at hand to give you step-by-step expert instruction, Holga-DIY has never been easier. This time we have two very different modifications for you to get stuck into. The first, affectionately termed the PinHolga, was the brainchild of Daniel. Here’s what he has to say about it: “I had wanted to make my own pinhole camera for a while, but never had the time to build one from scratch. Then, I realised the answer was staring me in the face. Why not just modify my Holga into a PinHolga?” “The ‘B’ setting on the Holga makes things really simple! With PinHolga I have created by far my best pinhole shots!” Step 1 First you need to make the pinhole. Take a shiny thin metal plate, sting a tiny, a very tiny hole with a needle into it and use sandpaper to get rid of the uneveness caused by the stich. Step 2 Gently, unscrew the lens (donít worry, you can screw it back on later!) Step 3 Tape the pinhole into the Holga. Step 4 Adjust your pinhole to the center Step 5 All you need now is the Holga cable release adaptor, a cable release and a tripod. (“The Clammpod is awesome” – Daniel) This handy little gizmo will protect your Holga from extreme-angle light reflecting inside the lens from the front and the sides – the idea being to banish those unwanted sun flare spots! The lens hood should allow you shoot towards the light without getting too much flare (but remember to keep the light source outside of the image). As far as you can, try to keep the lens hood in its original shape, if not, there is danger of getting nasty dark spots on your image. Although, it is a rather stylish chap, don’t leave it on when you are using the flash as it will block the burst of light. SO now you’re ready! Click on this link to download your very own free Holga lens hood. All you need then is a printer, a pair of scissors and a bit of sticky tape. Voila! Safety First : Please note the slim possibility of getting a paper-cut during the making of this modification. Bend the little Flaps to the inside of your lenshood to provide a stable ring so you can put it on the outside of the Holga lens without using glue. Sounds too easy to be true, eh? As a result this rare colour-negative Agfa film manages to create daylight images with unique warmth and rosy–saturation. Now this might seem a tad extreme when talking about film, but in this case we feel it’s justified. When cross-processed, the RSX200 conjures dreamlike blushed reds and rich blues, which can only be the work of original Agfa slide.
