odachrome wasn't the first process for colour
photography, but it was the first convenient and economical one. It
pioneered a great deal of photography we now take for granted.
It first it was very slow, but it picked up sensitivity over time, reaching ISO 200. Colour print film and the Agfacolour process came later. The remaining colour slide films are based on the Agfacolour process. Kodachrome slides outlast current slide films - I have many old inherited Kodachrome slides in perfect shape. (mostly waiting to be scanned) (actually the dyes in Agfacolour type slides stand-up to projector light better, but they don't age as well) Kodachrome initially had a stronger "punch" because of superior colour dye substitution process, but advances in the Agfacolour process helped bring it up to Kodachrome's level. That process was what probably brought the downfall of Kodachrome -- it being more elaborate and difficult meant there were fewer places that could do it. Unlike Agfachrome where there would be many businesses in a city that could do it quickly and reasonably well. Yet Kodachrome was one of the things that popularized photography and raised the quality people could achieve with affordable equipment. I cannot think of anything superior to the KM25.... The history of photography finally drew a line on its timeline: the era before and after the Kodakchrome. Hopefully one day we could see the KM colors on digital, but that day is stll far way... ------------- That is called grain. It is supposed to be there. |
